France has agreed to start stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, following months of pressure from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and saying there currently "have no effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French maritime police will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a potential technique to disable the engines of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a brief shift towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister left government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Now French officials will once more be allowed to stop boats before they collect migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the small boats will be stopped.
