Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to contest certain rulings from the official, echoing the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
